Bowls for Food and for Some Special Moments
Bowls maybe the last item on your list when buying things for the house, but you’ll be glad later if you did buy them; especially if you find out that they are must haves for any household. And I’m not only referring to the soup bowls because there are many kinds of bowls that you need to have in your cupboard. Besides, you and your family won’t always be the only people at the dinner table. You’ll have family and friends for dinner every now and then. Having different sets of bowls among your dinnerware will come in handy during such occasions.
If it’s chilly outside, you can serve your guests with a menu that includes a hot soup, stew or chowder. And during the warm summer days, you could have crispy and cool greens or fruit salads on the balcony or patio. These and other foods are best served in bowls.
Most dinnerware sets have one size of bowls on the minimum. Informal sets could have a single size for all the different types of foods. Chinaware which is more formal has two, three or even multiple sizes, from the smallest ones for fruit, to the larger soup bowls, deeper ones for cereals and much bigger sizes for the pasta.
Here are some other things you might be interested to know about bowls:
- The deeper bowls are for cereals; the shallow ones are usually for the soup;
- Soup and cereal bowls have rims; some are coupe shaped – meaning they are without a rim but sleekly curved;
- Bowls designed for soups often have wider rims than the cereal bowls;
- Cereal bowls are ideal for soup that are served with crackers;
- Some dinnerware makers manufacture both soup and cereal bowls while others create only an all purpose bowl for both purposes;
- The ones that are called cream soup bowls are for soups prepared with cream or milk and these are typically two-handled bowls;
- The wider bowls are perfect for serving green salads;
- Extra large bowls intended for soups can also be used for serving spaghetti or other pasta.
It is obvious that the first and most popular reason to have bowls is for the soup that’s why almost everybody wants to have them and manufacturers have created so many options. There’s the usual round one that is about 2 inches in depth and the much more elegant one with the bistro rim.
But, there is actually a bowl for every food, depending on the menu. Even if a bowl could double up for serving soup as well as pasta, you might want to have a separate pasta bowl instead. It will give your guests the impression that you are really putting your best foot forward when it comes to cooking and entertaining. And there are as many kinds of pasta bowls as there are many kinds of soup bowls. And there is still one more that you must have – the serving bowl; perfect for serving anything liquid.
Remember the special bowl you used for your morning cereal or dessert every time you were at grandma’s table? And there could even be more fond memories you could recall with a special bowl in the picture.
